Soe Cafe Sawyer Michigan Ramps Up For Summer

If you have been to Soe Cafe in Sawyer, than you understand the draw.  In the off season they seem to quiet down like much of the seasonally driven lake shore area, and like the rest its time to amp up and prepare for a busy summer season.  We have always been fortunate, where we enjoy the ambiance of the bar area, as barfoodies, we taste and drink the menu as most bar stool sailors would.  This time it was no different, although were picking up on a busier vibe than in the past, partly due to the PGA tour which was just 20 minutes North in Benton Harbor, as well as some favorable press they have bee receiving from boarding cities of Detroit and Chicago.

After all, the SW Michigan Lakeshore area is a very popular place which the Chicago crowd visits, and we shared some conversation at the bar with a couple who found out about Soe’s through their favorable press.  In fact, they are the owners of the Burger Bar Chicago, a gastropub of creative burgers in the hip area of Lincoln Park.  Like us, they were raving about the food.

This time around we went back to the pierogies…a must, better than grandma used to make, with a nice touch of an added beef base which they rested upon.  The Duck breast was very tasty and garnished by their home made spatzle.  If you have not had it, spatzle can be made many different ways, often from the European origin the certain recipe is from.  But it is made like pancake batter dropped in the hot oil and has a wonderfully light taste and texture.

On top of that we had their Ham and Cheeze , open faced, fried egg and mornay sauce with the biggest damn plate of fries around.  I am not so much a fry guy, although the accompanying diners and restaurant owners were raving.

Tis the season to head on down to the SW Michigan lakeshore, make sure you check out Soe’s Cafe…where they combine local agriculture, local craftsman, and honest food.
